You've probably heard the 50/30/20 rule: 50% of your income to needs, 30% to wants, 20% to savings and debt payoff. It's simple, easy to remember, and a genuinely useful starting point. But for a lot of the families we work with — juggling rent, remittances back home, and often a single income — the math doesn't always add up so cleanly. Let's look honestly at where it works and where it doesn't.
Where the Rule Works Well
If you have a stable income and moderate cost of living, 50/30/20 is a great sanity check. It forces you to categorize spending instead of just reacting to whatever's left in your account, and the 20% savings target is a solid long-term goal to aim for.
Where It Breaks Down
In high-cost areas of Florida, "needs" alone — rent, utilities, groceries, transportation — can easily eat 60-70% of a paycheck before anything else is considered. And for many families in our community, there's a category the rule doesn't even mention: sending money to family abroad. That's not a "want," but it's also not always a fixed "need" in the traditional sense — it often falls somewhere in between, and it can be substantial.
If you're following 50/30/20 strictly and it isn't working, that doesn't mean you're doing something wrong — it usually means the ratios need to be adjusted for your real numbers.
A More Realistic Approach
- Start with your actual numbers, not the percentages. Track a full month of spending before assigning any targets.
- Treat remittances as their own category rather than squeezing them into "wants" or "needs" — decide what you can sustainably send, then build around it.
- Aim for progress, not perfection. Even 5% in savings is better than 0%, and you can grow that percentage as your income or expenses shift.
- Revisit the plan every few months. Rent increases, new jobs, and family changes all mean your ratios should change too.
The Bottom Line
50/30/20 is a helpful mental model, not a law. Use it as a starting conversation with yourself about where your money goes — then adjust the percentages to match your real life, not the other way around.
